Hey everyone! I just wanted to share a story I submitted to PBS' American Portrait not too long ago, which you can find here. I've also included the story below as well: The tradition I carry on is… The tradition I carry on is . . . to heal. My mom and dad left their home country during the Vietnam War and sought refuge in the States. They did what they could to live a better life here, but they perpetually struggled with being displaced from a country that was rightfully their home. They bottled up this anger and resentment, and unfortunately, they projected this onto their only child through moments of abuse, neglect, and unspeakable cruelty. The damage has been done, but I won't let my past, nor theirs, nor the past of generations before us keep us from moving forward. I'm going to do what they all couldn't do: be willing to be open and to feel everything, the good and the bad. It says I've been on here for 10 years, but I've been using this account on and off. I created this account when I was 13 and then used it for about two years before I stopped and used it intermittently. Then I started using it again a little bit before starting my freshman year in college to keep up with some artists I met through an art forum, Polykarbon.
