Where the Evil Flowers Grow by GoddessNemesis
Where the Evil Flowers Grow
Photoshop CS2 and Manga Studio 5. 16.6" x 9"

Revisited an entry I made for The Last Witch Hunter contest last month. I wasn't happy with the composition and how the trees looked originally. So, I re-did the whole thing. I wanted to design the tree branches after the Weaire-Phelan structure because they looked strange and unnatural to me, and they fit with the concept of the first prologue of the movie. If you don't know what a Weaire-Phelan structure is, you can watch a short video on it here: The Weaire-Phelan Structure at BUBBLE

Process GIF and thumbnail on my Tumblr.
You can also see sketches for the piece on my website under the "Sketches" tab:…

EDIT: Oh, also I incorporated some La Téne designs in the witch's outfit, particularly her jewelry.

EDIT 2: Updated 11/23/2015. Fed a version of the image through Google's DeepDream generator, and used it as a layer to create the textures.

Acrylic, acrylic gouache, and casein paint on a cut piece from a Sapporo beer can. 8.5" x 1.25" x 3.125", all together.

This was originally made for the Sapporo CANvas contest, but I didn't get it submitted in time. So, I spent sometime after the deadline to finish it and bring it to a polish.

I had a lot of fun making this, and I feel like it's the most creative project I've worked on. The prompt for the Sapporo contest was to incorporate the beer can in the art in some way and to show a nice blend between ancient and modern Japanese styles. So, I decided to use part of the beer can itself. Since the piece I cut out reminded me of a bracer, I chose to turn it into a samurai bracer. I thought it'd be a neat way to show the combination of traditional and modern aesthetics. To top it off, I went even further with the concept by featuring Taisho era themes in a ukiyoesque style. I chose the Taisho era look because it's a prime example of how Japan dealt with mixing its traditions with the modern Western culture at the time.

It's one of the hardest projects I've worked on due to how experimental the process was. Most of the difficulty came from trying to paint on metal. One thing I picked up was sanding away some of the first paint layer to show the metal of the can underneath, and use it as part of the painting. It's a process I'd like to continue refining, all thanks to this personal project. This was definitely a huge learning experience.

Kim Nguyen is an aspiring concept artist and illustrator from the DFW area of Texas who loves to paint and come up with design ideas. Her main tools of the trade include watercolors and casein paints. Occasionally, she'll also use Photoshop and Manga Studio 5 for finishing touches on traditional paintings. She is obsessed with patterns, and her goal is to learn as much as she can about various cultures. Her hypothesis is that if she can learn the significance of iconography and visual motifs in relation to specific cultures, she may be able to tailor designs for concepts that strongly communicate their background story.

Since graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2013, her work has been featured in Jorge Gutierrez and Guillermo del Toro's "The Book of Life" movie.

Oooh. I thought it'd be fun to do this to walk down memory lane. So here we go!

1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?

It says I've been on here for 10 years, but I've been using this account on and off. I created this account when I was 13 and then used it for about two years before I stopped and used it intermittently. Then I started using it again a little bit before starting my freshman year in college to keep up with some artists I met through an art forum, Polykarbon. This was about a year before I used the account intermittently again. Then, I didn't use it again 'til
after I graduated college to upload work for a professional portfolio.

So I'd say, really, a total of 4 and 1/2 years.

2. What does your username mean?

It was named after the Greek goddess of retribution, Nemesis. I meant to make an illustration of her when I first started this account, but . . .

3. Describe yourself in three words.

sweets-lovin' artist. Who doesn't love good nom noms?

4. Are you left or right handed?

5. What was your first deviation?

Hahahahaha. Wow. This was originally for a Neopets art contest about 11 years ago.
